A couple accused of being part of a human trafficking ring were arrested in Thailand, leading to the rescue of six Burmese children.

Ukrit, 28, and Oranuch, 24, allegedly exploited the kids for forced labour by making them sell snacks, flowers and garlands at entertainment venues.

The children were reportedly subjected to physical abuse, including having their arms burned with heated metal spoons as punishment.

Police arrested the suspects at their home in Bangkok's Soi Ramkhamhaeng 122 area on October 13, after a Burmese mother, 28, reported them to police.

The mother said Oranuch had persuaded them to enter Thailand illegally through a natural border crossing in Tak province. She said she was promised a job as a housekeeper while the child would be able to attend school.

But after arriving in Thailand, their travel documents were confiscated and they were allegedly forced to work. The pair eventually escaped and sought help from authorities.

Ronnarong Thipsiri, deputy director-general of the Department of Provincial Administration, said the couple were detained and charged with 'jointly trafficking persons and exploiting child labour in a manner that may cause harm'.

He added: 'The six children are under the care of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security for psychological rehabilitation before legal proceedings are carried out.

‘The government is ready to crack down on illegal foreigner syndicates.

‘If any improperly acquired rights are discovered, their status will be revoked, and they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.'

Authorities were investigating whether the suspects fraudulently obtained Thai identification cards or civil registration status.

The six rescued children have been placed under the care of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security for psychological rehabilitation while legal proceedings continue.
