Four people, including two children, were killed when a bus crashed into two motorcycles in Indonesia.

The bus was travelling from from Banda Aceh to Bireuen when a motorcycle tried to turn across the road without warning on June 14.

The shocked bus driver could not react in time, smashing into the two-wheeler before hitting another on the opposite lane.

CCTV footage shows the horrifying moment the bus ploughed into the bikes along a poorly lit road in Pidie Regency, Aceh.

Two impacts were heard as the bus struck the riders and dragged the vehicles along the road.

A piercing screech echoed through the street as metal scraped against the tarmac.

Residents alerted emergency services after discovering the wreckage following the crash at 9:21 pm local time.

Officers found four people reportedly trapped in the undercarriage of the bus. They were declared dead at the scene.

The casualties were identified as Anadia, 33, Rustina, 57, and schoolchildren Cut Raisya Naisyira and Zurratul Wilza, both 13.

Aiyup Sami, head of the local traffic police unit, said the accident occurred at night with poor visibility.

He said: 'The scene was dark because it happened at night. The road surface was dry at the time of the accident. Officers have also secured the three vehicles involved in the accident.'

Police said the bus, a Honda Beat, and a Honda Scoopy were towed from the scene as an investigation is underway.

Indonesia sees thousands of road-related deaths each year, with motorcyclists among the most vulnerable road users. Poor visibility, traffic rule violations, and dangerous manoeuvres are among the leading causes of fatal road accidents.
